Biography for Tom Schlesinger

Thomas Schlesinger was Caroline Link’s story consultant on the scripts for her films, "Nowhere in Africa," which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2003, and "Beyond Silence," nominated for an Academy Award in 1998. He collaborated with German film director Doris Dörrie on the screenplay for her film, "Nobody Loves Me," which won the German Film Prize in 1996.

Tom is currently co-creating "The Stranger," a mythic, action adventure series for Moroccan television for a 2008 broadcast. He is also the story consultant on "Hearts on Fire," written and directed by "Story of the Weeping Camel" filmmaker Luigi Falorni.

As a story consultant, his clients have included "Black Stallion" director Carroll Ballard, “Golden Girls" Executive Producer Marc Sotkin, “Star Wars” producer Robert Watts, "Silkwood" Executive Producer Buzz Hirsch, Zoetrope Studios, Miramax, Universal Studios, Columbia Pictures, Constantin Film Production, X-Filme, and numerous European studios and broadcasters.

Tom will open his Story Ranch this summer, a script and story development center in Sonoma County.

Schlesinger received a Master of Fine Arts in Theater Arts at UCLA, and studied storytelling for ten years under the tutelage of Joseph Campbell and Jean Houston. Tom teaches his "Screenwriter as Storyteller" seminars under the auspices of Pixar Animation Studios. Lucasfilm, the Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America, the American Film Institute, and various studios and film schools internationally.

Tom has also facilitated Human Potential seminars including "Art as Transformation" at UCLA, "Myths, Dreams and Movies" at the Esalen Institute, the Saybrook Institute and The California Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, and "Creative Flow: the Inner Reaches of Outer Space," at the Academy of Art in Munich.
